Quakers have been on the leading edge of peacemaking and human rights issues for hundreds of years. From our roots in the anti-slavery movement, women’s suffrage and pacifism, today you will find Friends working to find alternatives to violence, to lessen our carbon footprint and to ensure equality in our own neighborhoods and around the world. We seek not only to understand the issues but also to take concrete action to bring about change. Our interest groups include:
Racism – We commit ourselves to addressing racism in ourselves, our Meeting, and the community and to align our thoughts, words, and actions with our sense of justice and Quaker values.
Eco-Spirituality – We hold loving care for our Earth by working to keep carbon in the Earth and to put an end to our fossil fuel addiction.
Human Trafficking – Keeps abreast of local, state and national efforts to combat human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking and participates as possible.
Speech to Speech – Advocates for improved telephone access for people with speech disabilities.
Yarners – We support Sacramento Blankets for Sacramento Kids (SBSK) making blankets for kindergarteners, for hospitalized children, and making hats for children experiencing homelessness. We also knit or crochet warm hats for the homeless each year to keep them warm over the cold winter months.
Loaves & Fishes Christmas Stockings – Each Christmas we fill large stockings with personal supplies, gift cards, gloves and hats for those served by Loaves & Fishes.
Undocumented Student Scholarship Project – We financially assist qualifying students at Sacramento State University who were brought to this country as children without authorization. http://www.quakerundocumentedstudentscholarship.org/index.html
Packages for Prisoners – During the Christmas season (Oct-Dec) we offer residents at two CA women’s prisons a package of items of their choosing.
